Engineering Graduate Focus at the ABLE Aberdeen Training Rig

Major oil & gas contractors can now guarantee safe and efficient training for their engineering graduates thanks to ABLE’s new training facility based in Dyce, Aberdeen.

For many years, Aberdeen oil and gas contractors have voiced their concern over the lack of facilities to train their engineering graduates in a safe environment prior to attending site or an offshore facility.

After listening to its customers needs, ABLE has tailored courses at the new training facility from basic instrumentation awareness, progressing through to advanced, in-depth, specific measurement programmes.

The graduate can gain a basic knowledge of all instrumentation before branching into a more specified field.

The centre has a purpose built rig offering a unique process environment for high-impact, hands-on training. The rig boasts two connected stainless steel vessels fitted with over fifty process instruments from world leading manufacturers, allowing delegates to experience unrivalled “hands-on” training on a truly impartial basis.

Water is pumped between the vessels by two independent centrifugal pumps providing various flow rates. The measurement capabilities installed at the facility includes all aspects and technologies of flow metering, level measurement, pressure, temperature and density. Other instruments include bespoke control systems, valve positioners, oil in water monitors, leak detection systems and energy meters.

The courses start from an environmental and safety aspect with introductory courses into process instrumentation, safety systems, hazardous environments and environmental pollution control awareness. They then proceed into introductory courses later leading into advanced knowledge and maintenance courses in each principal and measurement technology.

As specialists in nucleonic gauging and radiation safety, ABLE also offer radiation safety awareness and radiation protection supervisory courses.

Emphasis is placed on providing the graduate with a safe environment to gain “real world” practical experience, understanding and confidence to work with these measurement technologies in the often harsh and unforgiving offshore and land site environment. Coupled with the dedicated classroom for the theoretical training, the facility created is unique within the U.K.
